This is more like it

The Virgin staff don't like Pendolinos all that much either. "Not what they're cracked up to be," they say. Thay are quiet and they do tilt as they go through the Howgills at Tebay. But the ride in them is more akin to Shoestring Airlines than a premiers train.
Now this "Royal Scot" class 4-6-0 is a bit more like it, Iain. Here it is on the Carlisle-Settle Railway where steamers still run on some weekends. Granted, with a back up diesel at the other end.

I could relate to that line about having a "Back Up Diesel" on a chartered excursion.
On a very hot June 17 1998 day, I rode a chartered steam fantrip behind Milwaukee Road No# 261 -an American 4-8-4 type from 1944. This trip ran from Chicago Illinois to Galesburg Illinois USA, to the anual Galesburg Railroad Days celebration.
Somewhere out in the rural cornfields -I believe Meridan Illinois, the engines No# 2 right side main axel bearing ran "Hot", after several servicing stops and slow speed running, we arrived in the city of Galesburg, around the time the Festival was closing for the night.
We waited an hour at the Galesburg Station for our return train, powered by an old EMD SD-9 freight diesel requisitioned from the Galesburg Yard. Needless to say...Number #261 was taken to the Galesburg enginehouse and serviced overnight. The big steam locomotive took the Galesburg special back to Chicago the following night.

Thank You.
Eddie.
